The core routine
- Take your puppy out often. After waking, eating, drinking and play, and at regular intervals.
- Go to the same spot. A consistent place helps your puppy learn what it is for.
- Reward success right away. Praise or a treat as soon as your puppy finishes outside.
- Supervise indoors. Use a crate, pen or leash so you can catch signals early.
Accidents will happen
Clean accidents with an enzymatic cleaner and avoid punishing the puppy. Scolding after the fact teaches a puppy to hide, not to go outside.
Florida-specific tips
Hot afternoons and sudden thunderstorms can disrupt routines. Plan potty breaks around the weather, and use a covered spot if storms make your puppy reluctant to go out.
How the Puppy Head Start Program helps
Potty training is a core part of the 2-week Puppy Head Start Program. Your puppy lives in Jacob's home with a consistent schedule and structure, then comes back to you with a walkthrough of the routine so it keeps working at home.
